Avoiding Re-injury
After successful healing of gamekeeper's thumb, preventative measures should be taken by those engaging in activities that may lead to re-injury. For activities that require high degrees of thumb mobility, such as wide receivers in American football, taping of the thumb can provide stability necessary to avoid re-injury while giving the player enough mobility to be successful. For activities that don't necessarily require dexterity of the thumb, such as skiing, a thumb brace may effectively prevent re-injury to the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb. Additionally, as gamekeeper's thumb becomes more prevalent in skiers, it is not recommended to place the hands inside the loop of the ski pole as this may increase the likelihood of gamekeeper's thumb (9).
